Barn Museum

The museum building was formerly a livery stable on the Bell House property and was built at the turn of the century by Bellport builder Robinson and Watkins. The barn was later used by the firm Armstrong and Pierman, builders responsible for building, enlarging and modernizing many Bellport homes. By 1968 the barn was abandoned and was to be torn down when the Society purchased it from the Village for $1 and moved it across the street to the BBHS campus. On September 24, 1972 the grand opening and dedication ceremonies for the Barn Museum were held.

The numerous exhibits in the Barn Museum offer a glimpse of life on the shores of Bellport Bay: ship models, typical contents of local homes, Emily Underhill’s American Tinware collection, local photographer Frances H. Toms exhibit; the “Pig Skin Book” a rare 1696 account of whaling expeditions in this area, miniatures of the Bell Brothers, early craftman’s tools, Captain Wilbur Corwin’s decoy collection, art gallery of local scenes, antique toy collection.
